Jocotepec
The village of Jocotepec ("place of the plum trees) is 470 years old. It is the country seat (municipio) for a number of smaller surrounding towns. Historically home to fisherman, farmers and shopkeepers, our village has also become so famous for its hardworking and talented brick masons that contractors come to hire them from as far away as Acapulco! If you'd like to get the flavor, sights, sounds, aromas of daily life in a typical Mexican pueblo, this is the place!

A family enjoying "Joco's"
famous Birria at the "Stutterer's."

Birria
Authentic, unspoiled Jocotepec boasts a colorful market, bustling street activity, and modestly priced restaurants. At the village square or "plaza" you may get a spiffy shoeshine while watching the passing scene. Late afternoon is a lovely quiet time. Hundreds of birds arrive, first perching in orderly sunset rows on the town hall facade, then settling into the surrounding trees for their nightly slumber.

Small restaurants in the arcades surrounding the plaza are famous for their "birria", a tasty goat stew, that goes perfectly with one of Mexico's popular beers. Thursdays the "tianguis", or street market is a lively destination for tooled and stitched leather belts, silver jewelry, and the freshest garden produce.

Balloons, windmills, Sunday at the Plaza
Ballons
Sunday nights, after 8:00 mass, the plaza truly comes to life with street stands selling yummy local treats: tacos "al pastor", tamales, "churros" (long skinny donuts), fresh potato chips, or hot steamed garbanzo beans. You may also join the Sunday night "paseo", a centuries old courting ritual , where Seoritas and Seores stroll in opposing circles, flirting and tossing confetti, while watchful parents keep tabs from their sideline benches.

Flavourful and fresh
daily at the Market.
